About the Concert Series

On behalf of First United Methodist Church, Chula Vista we welcome you to the 2017-2018 Concert Series.

Music has been a strong part of this congregation’s life since its founding over one hundred years ago and continues to be one of the many things that pulls us together as a church and community.

The Concert Series Committee of FUMC has worked hard to present some of the region’s best performing artists. They are as diverse as the community we represent. We are proud to feature Ensembles, Jazz, Classical Orchestral and Choral music on the same series, and we truly believe there is something for everyone.

If the performing arts are important to you, please consider joining us in our endeavors by underwriting a concert, helping the committee and especially, coming to enjoy the music. This series has been put together for you and we want your help to promote good music in the South Bay.

2017-2018 Concert Series

Peter Sprague and Leonard Patton

Sunday, September 17 at 4 PM

Peter Sprague and Leonard Patton team up to play music that jumps around jazz, samba, The Beatles, Hendrix, Americana, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley. They frequently start one song, make up some new sonic material, create some loops and then attempt a safe landing in another aural vista. Freedom is one of the perks of being just a duo. Listen up! They’ve released an album called “Dream Walkin'” and it was nominated for the Best Jazz Recording at the 2015 SD Music Awards.

Samahan Filipino Performing Arts Center

Sunday, November 5 at 4 PM

Exquisitely beautiful costumes and narration highlight the performances of the Samahan Filipino Performing Arts Center as they present the traditional music and dance of the Philippines. You will experience the beautiful tribal dances of the North, the grace and mysticism of the Muslim south, the rural dance of peasants in the central islands and the exotic Spanish influences of the Maria Clara dance. We are excited to add this diverse group to our series for the first time.

Building Bridges Between the Sacred and the Profane. With this program, SACRA/PROFANA seeks to bridge the gap between secular and sacred music by examining choral music on sacred texts, written for a secular audience.  In this concert, the group will perform music by composers such as Leonard Bernstein, Jon Kull (orchestrator for “Avatar”), Moses Hogan, and Gregory Orban.

Hillcrest Wind Ensemble

The Hillcrest Wind Ensemble, one of Southern California’s finest adult musical organizations, celebrates over 20 years of providing quality musical programs for the greater San Diego community. With the turn of the new century, the band has evolved into an elite concert band, playing more advanced music with a new mission to entertain the ideal of diversity within our ranks as well as promoting quality music to all of San Diego.
