When many of us think of Jesus, we think of Jesus the King, Jesus the God Incarnate, or Jesus the Messiah. I wonder how many of us think of Jesus the Weird Kid from Jerusalem. One of the stunning and most distinctive parts of Christian faith, and what separates us from other religious traditions, is that we maintain the belief that our God, Jesus, was also human — with all the weird stuff that comes with being human. I mean, looking at the basic history of Jesus, the man was raised in the middle-of-nowhere town of Nazareth by a pretty regular carpenter and his wife. Like most Jewish children, Jesus grew up learning the Torah, their religious text, and went to school. He probably pooped his pants and scraped his knees, just like any other kid. Before Jesus became known as the messiah, his community just knew him as the kid from Nazareth. Even when Jesus began his ministry and was speaking the good word, people in his home town still just saw him as “the kid from Nazareth”.

I think that’s pretty powerful. While it’s really easy to remember Jesus exclusively as this incredibly powerful and divine person, I think that it’s also important to remember that God chose to experience Human-ness in Jesus. When we say that God is close to humanity, Jesus is proof of that. God knows human-ness because Jesus was human. No other faith reveals a God who was so willing to be close with his creation that he was willing to experience it himself. How great is that?
