I had a tough time reading this series of essays until I realized they were a series of essays, not a novel. Once I realized that, I went to the table of contents and selected sections where the title interested me. Even within that, I might not read every essay in the section at the same time.
Feel free to move about the book. I am thinking that you can move through it as you would move alongside a river. Sometimes follow the path. Other times step across stones to get to the other side, and sometimes just rest on the bank of the river and read.
